Dr. Robert G. Hart, M.D., is a Neurologist with special interest and expertise in stroke prevention and treatment. He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University and a Senior Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute at Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Hart founded and served as the Director of the PHRI Stroke Research Program for over a decade. Antithrombotic therapies to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation (especially novel oral anticoagulants), embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS), and intracranial bleeding related to oral anticoagulants are areas of special interest. He has served as principal investigator for several landmark international randomized clinical trials in stroke prevention and treatment, including the NIH-sponsored Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (SPAF) I, II and III trials, the Secondary Prevention of Small, Subcortical Strokes (SPS3) trial, the NAVIGATE-ESUS trial, and PACIFIC-Stroke testing a novel factor XIa inhibitor.
